Quite recently in the press, the name 'Gina Ford' has come up. Gina Ford is effectively something like a nursery nurse, who specialises in bring up babies to be happy and contented. She also (I think still) provides a service for celebrities, or at least well off people who have at least slight difficulty with their childrens sleeping or maybe even behaviour.
In a way she is a type of Super Nanny (I think) who was doing this type of thing before THE supernanny that all know!
The problem has come that parents differ greatly on parenting styles and some are arguing that trying to force your baby to do things that they do not want to at first is 'cruel'. These accusations are vigourously denied by Gina herself, and I believe, her lawyers!
When it comes to peoples lives, and especially when it comes to the lives of babies and small children, people can become very defensive and in some cases very critical of other peoples behavior and also parenting methods.
Some people, including Gina herself, claim that 'assisting' babies and children get into a routine is one of the best things you can do for them (assuming that starts with loving them!), it helps them thrive, get enough rest, behave and therefore get on better relationally with others.
On the other (extreme) hand, others will and do claim that it is cruel to not let your baby do whatever, whenever, they like. They claim that leaving a baby to cry for any length of time is cruel. Supporters of Gina claim that 'helping' a baby learn to settle themselves will help them more in the long term, helping them be more generally contented.
Gina Ford is certainly no stranger to controversy, so the dabate goes on.
