Some people like debate for the sake of debate. What an irritating friend they would make, always arguing, never going anywhere!
The value in debate is for the purpose of actually going somewhere, it is not (or at least should not be) just for the purpose of people having their voice heard for the sake of it. Although it is good to give people a voice, if it is not for the purpose of actually going somewhere, it is likely to be a big fat waste of time.
To quote one of the most famous writers that history has produced, 'I do not fight as a man beating the air'.
